Cohort Study

A standing panel · Gen Z · global · wave 2026-10 open

Gen Z, measured from the inside.

Cohort Study follows one generation living through screens and models. Each month, the same eighteen questions. In between, the moments themselves: what took your attention, what you felt first, how fast you went. Every row is published.

The Cohort Index, wave 2026-10

Five scores from the barometer, each 0 to 100. Activation is affect spiked by screens. Capture is attention taken rather than placed. Mediation is life through screens and models. Norms drift is what now feels normal. Atomisation is fewer people, thinner ties.

Until thirty Gen Z responses land in this wave, the bars show the synthetic seed and carry this note. 0 of 30 so far.

Second live test from the launch session. Chose to re-run the whole instrument on the real domain rather than trust a status code, and felt better the moment the textarea appeared.

Testing the ledger from the build session. Opened the panel page to check a chart and read every synthetic row instead, about eight minutes, then remembered what I was checking.

Cricket, last over. My father, who has not looked up from his phone in a year, watching the ceiling fan instead of the screen because he could not bear it.

Watched a man across the U-Bahn fold a paper crane for the whole eight minutes. Missed my stop. Worth it, weirdly.

The claim under test

Feelings decide. Reasons narrate. The screen sets the tempo.

A generation is the first to have its attention activated by design, all day, from the age it could hold a phone. The bet of this study is that the affect arrives first, the decision follows it, and the story about why comes last. And that a life lived at that tempo, through screens and now through models, changes what counts as normal and leaves people more alone. Finding 00 pre-registers the tests. The panel scores them as it grows.

Support

Unfunded, and looking.

The instruments run on nothing. Waves at scale, recruitment beyond the self-selected, and a proper weighting frame do not. If you fund work on attention, affect or young people, the protocol page has the design and the contact.
